Church Bay, Baltimore and washing

What a stunning day it is out here in West Cork. The water is so calm I’d be tempted to go for a kayak if it wasn’t for the fact that it is also pretty chilly. Instead, I must prepare my courses for our Spring session. It is, therefore, a day of powerpoints rather than paddling, but we all must have something to look forward to so here’s a wee list of upcoming events around and about:

23rd – 27th January: The January Blues Festival in venues all around Cork city. Sounds groovy, and all gigs are free.

24th January: The Fir Beag Collective at De Barra’s in Clonakilty. “Fir Beag are a West Cork collective of musicians that emerge every once in a while from the ocean, salt crusted & sea weed draped. Their folk rock is musical, evocative and uplifting, combining harmonies, lyrical hooks and flights of instrumental whimsy.”

27th January: Our courses start! Art history, Yeats and Heaney, photography, Irish film, and philosophy. Great value and fun and there’s still time to sign up!

31st January: Chinese New Year. Make your own clam sycee using cockles. There is a very special prize for anyone who can tell me where to find cockles near Baltimore. I have spent long hours raking away on various beaches with nothing to show for it except mud.

7th – 9th February Clonakilty Games Festival: a celebration of board games from Monopoly to the less-well known Tokyo.

7th February: Birdwatch Ireland Illustrated Talk – A Journey to Antarctica by Jim Wilson, in aid of wild bird conservation and education projects in County Cork. Talk starts at 8:00pm at Cork International Airport Hotel.

10th February: Cooking demonstration classes start in the Sibin Bar, Rath, Baltimore. Given that the food in the pub is some of the best I’ve ever had, these classes come highly recommended.

15th February: A Taste of West Cork Food Festival has a Valentine’s Ball in the West Cork Hotel.

Whenever You Want: A Grand Day Out, route of things to do on Beara peninsula. New brochure out in February.

Now, I’m off for a paddle. Opps, I meant I’m off to structure an entertaining and informative course.
